Hello Everyone,

There was interest expressed by some students in having a coding club regularly during some lunches for the remainder of the 2018/2019 school year. This would be a Horner ASB recognized club and space where students can explore coding and help peer students improve their coding skills. If you are interested, you must fill out the attached interest survey and watch Schoolloop for further details. Thanks for reading and your interest. If you have further questions, I have enabled the discussion option on this news feed, so please post them there.

Sincerely,

Mr. Whalley

The end of quarter 1 is October 31st. Please keep that in mind for the next couple weeks, and make appointments to talk to your teachers now rather than later, if you're looking for ways to improve your grade before the quarter ends.

DAILY BULLETIN

Here are the announcements for

Friday September 14, 2018

Today is the birthday of the United States National Anthem!

The song of our nation was penned by Washington’s attorney Francis Scott Key sat a dramatic moment during the war or 1812. On the night of September 13, 1814, Key watched as our country was attacked by the British navy at Fort McHenry. After watching the rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air throughout the night, dawn broke. Key was expecting to find Baltimore firmly under British control, but was stunned to see a battered but still flying American flag waving in the sunrise. So inspired was Key that he wrote the poem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Please stand and face the flag while the Horner Advance Choir sings the National Anthem.

Do you have art skills? You can design next year's planner cover! Your name will even be on the cover. If you aren't an artist (like me), you can use the computer to design it. Once all designs have been submitted, the school will get to vote on which one they like the best.

Rules:

1. Must have a hornet.

2. Must use blue and yellow (school colors)

3. Must include the years (2018-2019)

4. Obviously the school name.

5. Don't use copyrighted material.

You can turn it in via school loop or into Room 4. Make sure your name is on it. Good luck!!

ASB held an info session last Thursday whereby members of the Irvington High School Associated Student Government (ASG, similar to Horner ASB in functions and purposes) gave a presentation about how current 8th graders can join Irvington ASG in the fall. You can find the presentation here: tinyurl.com/ycjyukzj

During the presentation, Irvington ASG also shared important information about the application and selection process for 2 types of positions incoming freshmen can apply for. The application can be found here: tinyurl.com/y7t5xxht

  1. Freshman Class Officer: 2 spots available, applicants need to fill out the application, petition sheet, teacher's evaluation, and go through a popular election vote
  2. Freshman Representative: 2 spots available, applicants need fill out the application, teacher's evaluation, but do not need to fill out the petition sheet or go through a popular election vote

IMPORTANT:

  • Freshmen Representative candidates do not need to fill out petition sheet of 100 signatures; only Freshman Class Officer candidates do, as the class officer position is more focused upon gathering class-wide support to drive forward class projects and initiatives in the upcoming year.
  • For all applicants' Teacher Evaluation sheet, we request that teachers write the applicants' first semester grade in "Grade in Class" section, not the current SchoolLoop grade.

If you have any question about joining ASG or the selection process, please contact elections@ihsvikings.org

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This is a reminder that our Comprehensive Sexual Education and Health unit will be coming up this spring. This course of study will conform to the guidelines provided by the California State Education Code 51933 and the California Healthy Youth Act.   This is an approximately two week unit designed to:

1.       Provide pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their sexual and reproductive health from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and from unintended pregnancy.

2.       Provide pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to develop healthy attitudes concerning adolescent growth and development, body image, gender, sexual orientation, relationships, marriage, and family.

3.       Promote understanding of sexuality as a normal part of human development.

4.       Ensure pupils receive integrated, comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased sexual health and HIV prevention instruction and provide educators with clear tools and guidance to accomplish that end.

5.       Provide pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to have healthy, positive, and safe relationships and behaviors.

We will be holding a parent info night on Wednesday March 28 from 6-7 in the Horner Library.

At this meeting we will be reviewing the curriculum with the parents and answer any questions you may have.

You can also preview the curriculum ahead of time here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XPFTT6nSr-OvEChgGxRY2MZfjTlmtVN2Cr5Cp8h7mMQ/edit

8th Grade: May  21-June 5, 2018

NOTE: State law allows parents/guardians to opt their student out of any or all comprehensive sexual health education lessons. Students opting out of comprehensive sexual health education lessons will be provided alternate curriculum under the supervision of a credentialed teacher.

If you do not want your student to participate in comprehensive sexual health education, you must provide, in writing (email or on paper), a note to your student’s teacher no later than April 20th.

Dear Students,

We are excited that construction has started.

We all need to be safe and work together as we move toward becoming a middle school.

Before school, you may wait in the Courtyard or Blacktop.  At lunch, you may only eat in the Multi- Purpose Room and Courtyard.

Do not bring food or drinks onto the blacktop.

After school, go straight to the Pick Up Drop Off next to the Big Gym to wait for your ride.

Mr. Pabley and Ms. Watson Bird will review expectations and procedures on Friday in the Town Hall meeting in your PE class.

Let's keep Horner safe and positive!
